Thirty months. It’s a metric often utilized to measure the earliest years of life, but I have come to believe it should also encompass a professional position. In those first couple of years, every week and month brings new experiences; bricks of wisdom that form the foundation of how you move forward.

For Price Mabry, the past 30 months with Roberts Company, also known as Corner Market and Grocery Depot, have proven to be just so. Price, who showcased exemplary leadership as the Vice President of Fresh for the burgeoning chain, recently took the mantle of Vice President of Sales and Marketing. With a proven track record in enhancing the fresh department, his pragmatic and passionate commitment to customer satisfaction—similar to the one guiding the unique structure of the company—align seamlessly with the lofty goals its new leadership team are set to achieve.


Melissa De Leon Chavez: Price, congratulations on such an exciting chapter! First off, you get to sharE the task of growing Corner Market with two other powerhouses. Can you tell me about the moves you all recently made?

 

Price Mabry, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Corner Market: In January 2024, David Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of the Roberts Company/Corner Market and Grocery Depot and a third-generation grocer, proudly announced the retirement of the esteemed Mike Sowden, who has served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the past 23 years. During his tenure, Mike was pivotal in strategically advancing the company's sales, expanding its store count, and positioning it for future growth.

Mike Sowden's exceptional leadership and guidance have been instrumental in fostering an environment of success, resulting in significant milestones for the company. With Mike's retirement, the company is set to embark on a new chapter. In addition to myself, there are two other well-deserved promotions within our leadership team.

Eli Popicg, who has demonstrated dedication and expertise as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), will ascend to the role of President of the company. This promotion reflects Eli's significant contributions to the organization's financial well-being and strategic direction.

Joel Edwards, who previously served as Vice President of Operations, will step into the role of COO. Joel's operational acumen and commitment to excellence make him an ideal leader to carry forward the legacy of Mike Sowden.

With this newly formed leadership team, built upon the foundation laid by Mike Sowden, the company is poised for continued success. As the Roberts Company moves forward, this strategic leadership transition ensures that our team is well-prepared to serve customers with excellence and innovation. The legacy of Mike Sowden will undoubtedly endure, guiding the company into a promising future under the capable leadership of Eli Popicg, Joel Edwards, and myself.


MDC: The trio of promotions certainly signifies the company's appreciation for internal talent and its confidence in your, Joel’s, and Eli’s capabilities. What are some key advantages of bringing your fresh background to the marketing side?

PM: I am thrilled to integrate my extensive experience in the fresh department into the dynamic realms of Center Store and Marketing. Recognizing the significance of synergy, I aim to unify the sales and marketing teams, establishing cohesive goals that resonate with our customers in-store, online through our app, and on social media platforms. Our objective is to deliver an unparalleled customer experience, highlighting exemplary customer service and showcasing our commitment to local and organic products. This dedication distinguishes us as the preferred grocery store in the markets we proudly serve.


MDC: I love the idea of your fresh background and understanding leading you forward as you help further shape the company’s identity. Are there a couple of initiatives you are particularly excited about?

PM: My utmost enthusiasm lies in the growth of our team. Our collective success hinges on the exceptional individuals within our midst. The measure of my excitement is intricately tied to the achievements of those surrounding me. Our track record in previous years attests to this, and we remain confident that with our current team, there are even greater accomplishments on the horizon.


MDC: You’ve also touched on the importance of vendor engagement. Can you tell me a bit more about your team's unique approach and why these relationships are so valuable?

PM: Maintaining strong relationships with our vendor community remains a paramount priority for us. We've carefully designed our go-to-market strategies, leveraging our vendor relationships to establish a strategic alliance. This alliance is crucial in ensuring our competitiveness within the marketplace, particularly in the realms of print and digital advertising, social media engagement, our app, and the ongoing development of our employees.

It is rare and valuable to see passion burning brightly in combination with an extensive background—let alone threefold. It is a foundation I can see branching out to every employee until the customer cannot help but be a part of it. So, while this trio may just be starting to walk together in these new roles, I have no doubt we will see the Corner Market running with them in the lead.
